Thai Yoga Massage
Thai Traditional Medicine (TTM) is integration between Ayurveda (Medical Science of India) and Chinese Medicine. Thai Massage is part of Thai Traditional Medicine. Dr. Shivaga Komarapaji, who was the personal physician of Buddha is considered the Father of Thai Traditional Medicine. He set up the basic treatments that have been traditionally passed on till the present day.
The first evidence of TTM is presented in the stone inscriptions in 1182-1186. In 1788 Bangkok became the capital of Thailand. The old monastery Wat Phodharam was reestablished as a first grade royal monastery and now it is called Wat Pho. Medical texts and proverb were collected and inscribed on the decorative stones around Wat Pho. Thus, Wat Pho became the first opened university of Thiland.
In 1831, the King Rama III had ordered to gather and revise the knowledge of medicine and massage throughout the kingdom. The additional medical texts were inscribed in the pavilions of Wat Pho. The 80 stone statutes with Yoga Stretching Postures were created and are kept in Wat Pho until present day (although, only 25 statures are left).
In 1955, Thai Traditional Medical School has been established in Wat Pho. The course of Thai Traditional massage have been set up and taught since 1962. Since Wat Pho is considered the main medical and massage school in Thiland. Every year hundreds of students from around the world come to Wat Pho to learn traditional Thai Massage.
Thai Medicine believes that human body is composed from the soul and the fundamental four elements: Earth, Water, Wind and Fire. When the Elements are in balance, the body is healthy. All diseases start from wrong Wind circulation, which is responsible for energy in the body. When Wind moves freely through the body meridians, the human body is free from diseases. When it is obstructed in some way, it causes problems.
Thai Massage manipulates not only muscle and joints of the body, but also 10 main meridians and numerous accupressure points along them. When pressing on the lines during massage procedure, the pressure stimulates the flow of energy (Wind) in the body. It will directly heal the organs and also helps to remove toxins from the body tissues. The pressure must be quiet high to provide stimulation and sometimes can cause pain. However, it will be re-energizing and refreshing afterward.
As Simon de Loubere-the French liaison the Thai royal court-wrote in 1661 about Thai Massage:
"When a person is sick in Siam, he begins by causing his whole body to be molded by one who is skillful herein, who get upon the body of sick person and tramples him under his feet."
