Planets.

There are 9 planets in Vedic Astrology:

1. The Sun. The Sun represents your soul or the self.
2. The Moon. The Moon is the planet of emotions and feelings.
3. Mars. Mars is the planet of will, energy, and desires.
4. Mercury. Mercury is the planet of intellect.
5. Venus Venus is the planet of love, beauty, and pleasure.
6. Jupiter. Jupiter is the planet of knowledge, wealth, and fortune.
7. Saturn. Saturn is the planet of commitment and responsibility.
8. Rahu. Rahu is the planet of compulsion and obsession.
9. Ketu. Ketu is the planet of detachment and dissatisfaction.

Natural benefics are Jupiter, Venus, the Moon and Mercury. They are benefic because they increase, support, give luck and fortune; they provide comfort, ease, health and peace in our lives.

Natural malefics are Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Ketu, and the Sun. They are malefics because they decrease, separate, obstruct, delay, destroy, and create other difficulties in our lives. The Moon, when it is new (close to the Sun), loses its benefic qualities and becomes a malefic as well. It is particularly so when the Moon is waning – moving towards the Sun. Mercury, if badly associated (influenced by the other malefics) can also be a malefic.
